Queen Mary 2 - 2014

Queen Mary 2 - 2014

As a young boy I used to spend my weekends walking my grandfather’s dog around the fields near Kenilworth and, with his trusty Canon 300V to hand, photographing the world around me. From an early age I had a love for the ‘great outdoors’ and at 16, although I had intended to join the armed forces, I decided instead to pursue my interest in photography.

After leaving school with 6 GCSE's at B-C grades, one of them being an A in Photography, I applied for a National Diploma course in Photography at a local College of Further Education. By mid 2010 I still had the desire to extend my knowledge and understanding of the photographic image so later that year I applied for an HND course in Visual Communication at Warwickshire College. I was accepted on the basis of my portfolio submission.

Whilst studying on the HND course I established close friendships with two of my college lecturers and exhibited my work alongside their work at two public exhibitions. After successfully completing my HND I considered the possibility of studying for an additional two years to get a BA Honours degree. However, I decided that I now possessed the necessary skills and knowledge to enter the world of work and gain some valuable practical experience.

Mid 2014 I joined P&O as part of their team of professional photographers. The post required us to provide a high-quality photographic service for guests and clientele on their cruise ships. This experience taught me many new skills when photographing people both individually and in groups. It also provided me with experience of wedding photography and an opportunity to capture those special moments for a couple to treasure forever. One of my favourite quotes is, 'If you wait, people will forget your camera, and the soul will drift up into view'. -Steven McCurry.
